(If you want the detailed order of Mass including prayers and responses scroll down a little lower)

This part walks you through the Order of Mass to help you follow along, understand what is happening, and prayerfully participate.

The Introductory Rites

Purpose: To gather the community, prepare hearts, and acknowledge our need for God.

  • Entrance Procession and Hymn: The priest and ministers enter, symbolizing the beginning of a sacred journey.

  • Sign of the Cross: A reminder of our Baptism and who we are in Christ.

  • Greeting: The priest greets the people with words like “The Lord be with you.”

  • Penitential Act: We confess our sins together, saying “Lord, have mercy,” asking for God’s forgiveness.

  • Gloria (on Sundays and feasts): A joyful hymn praising God’s glory.

  • Collect (Opening Prayer): The priest prays on behalf of the people, and we respond “Amen.”

The Liturgy of the Word

Purpose: To hear God speak through Scripture and reflect on His message.

  • First Reading: Usually from the Old Testament.

  • Responsorial Psalm: A sung or spoken reflection from the Book of Psalms.

  • Second Reading: From the New Testament Epistles (on Sundays and solemnities).

  • Gospel Acclamation (Alleluia): Sung in anticipation of the Gospel.

  • Gospel Reading: The high point of the readings, proclaimed by the priest or deacon. We stand in reverence.

  • Homily: A reflection by the priest, applying God’s Word to daily life.
Creed (Profession of Faith): We declare the core truths of our faith.
Prayers of the Faithful: We offer prayers for the Church, world, and personal needs.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Purpose: To offer the Sacrifice of Christ and receive Him in Holy Communion.

  • Presentation of the Gifts: Bread and wine are brought to the altar.

  • Prayer over the Offerings: The priest offers these gifts to God.

  • Eucharistic Prayer: The heart of the Mass, where the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ through the words of consecration.

    • Includes the Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus), the Consecration, and the Mystery of Faith.

  • The Great Amen: The congregation affirms the prayer of the priest.

The Communion Rite

Purpose: To prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.

  • The Lord’s Prayer: We pray together as Jesus taught.

  • Sign of Peace: A gesture of unity and reconciliation.

  • Lamb of God (Agnus Dei): We acknowledge Christ as the Lamb of God.

  • Reception of Holy Communion: Catholics in a state of grace may come forward to receive the Eucharist. Those not receiving may come forward with arms crossed for a blessing.

  • Prayer after Communion: A final prayer of thanksgiving.

The Concluding Rites

Purpose: To be blessed and sent forth to live the Gospel.

  • Announcements (if any).

  • Final Blessing: The priest blesses the congregation.

  • Dismissal: We are sent forth to love and serve the Lord, responding, “Thanks be to God.”
Recessional Hymn: The priest and ministers process out.

Tips for New Catholics

  • Don’t worry if you don’t know all the responses—just listen and follow along. Many churches offer missalettes or guides.

  • You can watch and pray silently if you’re unsure. Participation grows over time.

  • Kneeling, standing, and sitting have meaning but don’t worry about doing everything perfectly at first.

  • If you’re not yet receiving Communion, you’re still fully welcome. You can make a spiritual communion or ask for a blessing.

A Foretaste of Heaven

The Mass is not just a ritual. It is an encounter with the living Christ, a participation in His sacrifice, and a communion with His Body—the Church. Whether you’re returning to faith or discovering it anew, let the beauty and mystery of the Mass draw you closer to God, week by week.

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
(bow at the next lines)
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
